SMCA - FAQ for Transitioning to ICD-10
Q. What is ICD-10?
A. ICD-10 is the medical code set that replaced ICD-9. International Classification
of Disease, 10 th revision, includes both diagnosis codes (ICD-10-CM) and
procedure codes (ICD-10-PCS).
Q. What happened to CPT codes (current procedural terminology) since
the implementation of ICD-10?
A. CPT codes are still in use for current medical charts. The switch to ICD-10 did
not affect CPT coding for outpatient procedures.
Q. Do all nationally recognized certifications contain questions with ICD-10
codes?
A. Yes, ICD-9 codes are no longer recognized for current medical charts. All
nationally recognized coding certification exams have questions covering current
medical code sets.
Q. Did any coding techniques or processes change with implementation of ICD-
10?
A. No, coding techniques remain the same; however, the implementation of ICD-10
brought about the need for greater specificity in medical documentation. You
will need to take care to pay closer attention to documentation details.
Q. I completed a medical coding course a while ago for ICD-9 coding. Do I need to
take another, full medical coding course to prepare for a current national
examination?
A. ICD-10 was fully implemented on October 1, 2015. A full three years has passed
since the implementation and although you may not need to take a full medical
